The Effect

The magician shows a small vase containing a single ball. The ball is removed and placed into a pocket (or cleanly vanished). The empty vase is covered with its lid. When the lid is lifted a moment later, the ball has magically reappeared inside the vase. It can then be covered again and made to vanish just as quickly, returning to the magician’s pocket.

How It Works (The Secret)

The illusion relies on a clever mechanical gimmick:

• The Secret Shell: The vase actually contains a hidden, curved insert (a fake half-ball or shell) that matches the color and shape of the real ball perfectly.

• The Lift: When the magician lifts the lid normally, the shell stays nestled inside the vase, making it look like the ball is there.

• The Vanish: When the magician pinches the sides of the lid while lifting it, the hidden shell is picked up inside the lid, revealing the empty vase beneath it.
